The Government of Ireland is running a Basic Income pilot that began in September 2022. 2000 artists and cultural workers will receive a weekly unconditional income of €325 weekly for a period of three years. This third session will be an opportunity to check-in with some of the artists involved in the pilot scheme and learn from them about how it is affecting them and their creative communities.

We are thrilled to announce that Natalie Bennett, Green Peer and former Green Party leader, will be sharing her thoughts on the potential impact of a UBI on sustainable diets and food systems with us.

Our third online webinar builds on our launch event by exploring how a UBI can assist us with the transition to a sustainable UK food system. We are supported by our friends at UBI4Farmers, a grassroots movement advocating for the implementation of an unconditional basic income for farmers, farm workers and food producers in the UK.

Universal basic income (UBI) is a simple idea with huge potential to address poverty and inequality: just give people money, as a right of citizenship, not as welfare.

In this session to coincide with London Challenge Poverty Week, Daniel Mermelstein, a campaigner with UBI Lab London, will introduce the concept of UBI and explain why it can be a powerful tool in the fight against poverty and inequality. He will also address some of the common objections and misconceptions around UBI.

With prominent business and government leaders backing calls to implement universal basic income (UBI), the idea is receiving high levels of coverage and interest across the north of England.

But what is UBI? How might it work, what might be the benefits, and is this something that could work in the North? These questions will be examined and pondered upon in this joint Basic Income North and RSA event.

He will discuss his proposition with Malcolm Sawyer (MS) who is a retired professor of economics from the University of Leeds and a critic of the concept of Sovereign Money. So this promises to be a lively online event where you will learn more about Universal Basic Income (UBI) and Sovereign Money (SM). You will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide comments on the topic.

Our second event will focus on understanding the realities of what young people today are really facing and what needs to change.

Growing up you're always told that you're working towards what's ahead of you, that you'll understand when you get there. But what happens after you reach the goal, pass the exam, get the grade? Do we just ‘win’ working towards the next thing?! 

There is an endless expectation of what you're going to be...rather than just being able to Be…!

The event will consider how a basic income could be fully rolled out across Wales i.e. is independence necessary or is further devolution the answer.

Following our highly enjoyable meeting at Bundobust Piccadilly in March, we now want to get together online to plan our next steps as a Lab.  

We’ll use the discussions we had around the table as a starting point, but anyone who couldn’t make the meeting is extremely welcome to come along this time and give their comments and ideas.  If you’ve got the time to have a quick look before the meeting, you’ll find ideas and pictures from the Bundobust event at the link below.

Hunome and UBI Lab Finland, Systems Change Finland, invite you to participate in the UBI online sense-making session on Hunome, where we have started to build a SparkMap on the many perspectives around UBI. In the online session, we will explore how to spark ideas and reflect together using Hunome.com platform. On the UBI SparkMap in Hunome you can see the multiple, multidimensional and multidisciplinary perspectives on UBI, bring your thoughts and knowledge there, learn from others, and build shared understanding together with the atomic community. In Hunome the thinking around UBI is alive, ongoing and evolving, not just one-off events. Anyone can participate anytime, add on to others’ thinking and bring one's own perspectives into this wicked problem.

At our in person meeting on 8th December last month we decided that we need some expert help in thinking about what effects a UBI might have on inflation.  We are delighted to announce that Josien Pick, a macroeconomist and one of the co-founders of UBI Lab Den Haag, has agreed to lead us in this online discussion on how UBI will impact inflation.

From the start of UBI Lab Sheffield, one of their main ambitions has been to test a Basic Income in the city. On 27 September, they're going to start planning what a pilot in Sheffield could look like.
